What's different about the Pilates method?

Joseph H. Pilates designed more than 500 specific exercises using five major pieces of unique apparatus to develop the body uniformly.

Instead of performing many repetitions of each exercise, Joseph H. Pilates preferred fewer, more precise movements, requiring proper control and form. Because your mind is required to engage with your body to perform the movements correctly, you experience a new awareness of muscle function and control.

How does it work?

Most Pilates-based exercises are low-impact in nature and are easy on the  joints. As such, many exercises are appropriate for use in rehabilitation settings.

The Core of the Body - abdomen, lower back, and buttocks - is supported and strengthened, enabling the rest of the body to move freely.

In order to train the cardiovascular system at an optimal intensity level, a Pilate-based exercise program should be used in conjunction with a separate cardiovascular training program.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

A Pilates-based program aims to restore the body to its natural state and will help to:
balance muscular strength with flexibility,
improve posture,
improve coordination / proprioception,
reduce and / or eliminate muscle imbalances,
improve circulation,
reduce stress levels
promote a greater sense of well-being.

Is Pilates like yoga?

In some respects Pilates conditioning is like yoga.  Both are considered mind-body type methods of movement and emphasize deep breathing and smooth, long movements that encourage your muscles to relax and lengthen.

The difference is this:  while yoga requires moving from one static posture to the next, without repetitions, Pilates flows through a series of movements that are more dynamic,  and anatomically based.

How is Pilates different than weight training or other resistance exercise?

Pilates exercise can rebalance muscles around the joints, correct previous over-training and balance strength with flexibility.

What kind of results can I expect to see from doing Pilates?

You can expect an increase in flexibility, mobility, balance, and body awareness, as well as a decrease in many types of pain.

How long will I have to do the workout before I see results?

The average active person, doing 2-3 classes per week should see some results within 10-12 classes.

I have a bad back.  Will I be able to do Pilates?

A Pilates workout is gentle and controlled with no sudden jarring movements.  If you commit yourself to a consistent workout schedule you
will certainly feel results.

How many times a week is ideal for Pilates sessions?

At least one private session a week in addition to another class ( mat or semi-private) is optimal.  As with any other physical discipline, the more you engage in it  the more you receive in return.

Will Pilates help me lose weight?

 Because Pilates helps increase overall bodily health, including improved
muscle tone and cardiovascular functioning, it can be a factor in any weight loss efforts.

Can Pilates be used for rehabilitative purposes?

Absolutely.  Pilates has a long history of obtaining fantastic results as a rehabilitative tool for everything from  hip replacements to disk fusions.

What does Pilates cost?

Private classes vary from $50 to $75; purchase a series of 10 and the cost is much less.   How about starting with an introductory package?

Pilates-based exercise programs should not take the place of regular medical check-ups.  An individual who is pregnant, or who has orthopedic or other health conditions, should obtain approval from a physician before beginning a Pilates program.
